Lilting is probably one of the subtle movies I have ever watched. By Hong Khaou, a Cambodian director, the grief added layers by layers on each sequence. Every time when it was so closed touching my heart, it slipped away. Not until the last scene, Richard (Ben Whishaw) came out, telling Junn (Cheng Pei-pei) that her son was also gay.
The story is about a Chinese/Cambodia mother, Junn ,mourning about the death of her only child, Kai. One day, Richard, boyfriend of Kai, came visit her at the elderly centre. Without a common language, they started to help each other to get over the sorrow. At first I was skeptical about the homosexual theme, but then I realise it was crucial for the whole movie. I found Lilting very beautiful with misery. The love between partners and mother-and-son was so strong…
